Collection consists chiefly of letters, 1823-1857, to Dr. John Thornton Gilmer from his son, Frederick George Gilmer, and other relatives. Topics include Georgia politics, family and farm news, murder, wife abuse, and a detailed description of Sarah Jane Loving Gilmer's illness. Collection also includes a family history written by Thomas Lewis Gilmer, particularly concerning slavery, tobacco farming, the Civil War, his career as a dentist and a pioneering case of jaw reconstruction.
